The School Nurse Role
- To provide the best level of health care for school aged children
- To participate in health promotion and health education
Aims
- To maintain the physical, social and emotional health of all school aged children to enable them to reach and maintain their full potential and maximise on the educational opportunities available
- To encourage healthier lifestyles in the school population.
Objectives
- To carry out a structured health surveillance programme throughout a child’s school life.
- To identify health needs and offer an appropriate response to those needs.
- To negotiate and facilitate health promotion within the school and surrounding community in line with local and nation targets.
- To liaise with parents / carers and schools on health issues relating to the school aged child.
- To support the school aged child and their family whenever possible, at a time of need.
- To identify and protect children in need.
- To liaise with other professionals involved in working with children and their families.
How to access the service
School Nurses can be accessed either at school or their base.

Referral criteria / process
Referrals are received by the school nurse at their base clinic or on a one to one basis.
Referrals are taken from:
- The child
- A parent / family / carer
- School staff
- Other health professionals
Locations where the service is provided
The service is offered in all schools and health centres within the City. School Nurses also undertake home visits.
