Dietetics

Dietitian giving advice on eating healthily
Dietetic treatments are provided for those individuals who need to alter what they eat in order to treat a medical condition. For instance an individual may have diabetes and therefore need to alter their diet so that their medication can be as effective as possible. They may want to lose weight so that the burden on the heart, lungs and joints is minimised. For others it may be that they are having difficulty eating and need help to work out how to get all of the nutrients required in the easiest possible way.

Dietitians advise on what to eat and help individuals and families to work out how to alter lifestyle and behaviour so that this change is sustained.

How to access the service

For most conditions dietitians need to have a referral from the GP or other health care professional e.g. health visitor, district nurse, so that they can have access to the details of the medical condition before they can give advice.
