Community Paediatric Nursing Service
The service offers nursing care, treatment, advice and support concerning a wide range of conditions to parents, children and young adults (under 19s) in homes, schools, care homes and respite centres across the city.
The Service provides:
- Advice and support to epilepsy patients up to the age of 19 years old. The service can be provided in the home, in respite care, care homes and in schools for the treatment of Epilepsy. Referrals from any healthcare professional are accepted.
- Counselling and support to parents, siblings and children with palliative care needs.
Counselling and support to parents who have had a neo-natal death and support to staff in schools that have experienced a child's death. - An oncology (cancer) nursing service that provides treatment for children and young people and gives them advice and support both within the out-patient clinics at New Cross Hospital and at home.
- Treatment for children who have wounds from accidents or surgery and require changing dressings.
- Treatment for children with life limiting conditions and technology dependant children (including cardiac patients).
- Treatment and advice for children with continence problems from the age of 4 years old
- A Consultant led, GP direct-access service at the GEM Centre offering a clinic for the assessment, diagnosis and prescription of medication and dietary advice for children with constipation. Nursing support and advice is also available during home visits.
- Nutritional Care - nurses provide children with tube feeds (gastro-stomy or naso-gastric) in school or respite care. A multi-disciplinary team offer a feeding clinic held at New Cross Hospital, for children who have complex feeding problems.
- Support in the home for patients on traction after being discharged from hospital following orthopaedic surgery/treatment
- A ‘Special Schools’ Service - offering children specialist nursing care in Green Park, Penn Hall and Broad Meadow Schools, as well as treatment and support to patients in the home.
Locations where the service is provided
The service can be provided in the patients home, care home, clinics, schools and child development centres across the borough, depending on the assessed needs of the patient.
