Children’s Occupational Therapy

The children’s community occupational therapy service is available to all children and young people up to the age of 19, with developmental delay, neurological, or neuromuscular conditions, which affect their independence and other long term conditions such as children’s arthritis.  A large number of children referred to the service have developmental coordination disorder which may be known as dyspraxia or be identified on the autistic spectrum or with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
The aim of the occupational therapy service is to help the child or young person reach their full potential in activities of daily living by providing therapeutic intervention, special equipment, advice and support.

The occupational therapists work in close partnership with the child, their family and other professionals.

How to access this service
Referrals to this service are received in writing from any health professional, including Health Visitors, GPs, Consultants and therapists or from professionals in education including teachers and educational psychologists.
After being referred, parents are invited to an initial meeting where their needs are identified, advice and support are given and a further meeting is offered which is followed by a series of group sessions for their child.  Intervention continues in groups or on a one to one basis until goals are achieved.  We prioritise children with certain conditions where a group setting is inappropriate and endeavour to see these children as soon as possible and within eight weeks.
