How can I tell if I have a healthy weight?
As an adult, you can get an indication if you are a healthy weight by working out your body mass index (BMI).

BMI Results
- Under 18.5 would be considered undesirable. Check out the healthy eating section for some ideas on how to achieve a balanced diet. You may also like to consider a health check with your GP or practice nurse.
- Between 18.5 and 25 is considered to be within the normal range.
- Between 25 and 30 is considered overweight. Check out the healthy eating section and consider what changes you could make in what you eat and how you can become more active.
- Over 30 is considered obese. You may wish to seek professional help to lose weight. Support services for adults and children are available in the city - please see the tackling obesity section for more details.
Parents can get an indication of their child’s weight status by having them checked against a standard growth chart and discussing with a health professional. Parents also have the opportunity to see a result for their child in their reception year and year 6, as school nurses undertake measurements as part of their role.
